15 MayWhat’s causing mass pelican and dolphin deaths in Peru?

Delays in the autopsies of thousands of dead pelicans and dolphins in Peru are causing difficulties for officials as they attempt to determine causes of death in these die-offs.

The carcasses of dead pelicans still litter the beaches of northern Peru, even as the last of nearly 900 dolphins are cleared away.

The mass die-offs have Peruvian scientists searching for a cause and environmentalists raising questions about the government’s ability to protect the Pacific nation’s marine life, among the world’s most abundant thanks to the Humboldt current that hugs most of its 1,500-mile (2,400-kilometer) coast.

After weeks of study, investigators say they think they know why at least 4,450 pelicans have died: Hotter than usual ocean temperatures have driven a type of anchovy deeper into the sea, beyond the reach of many young pelicans.

But Peruvian scientists studying the deaths of dolphins and porpoises from early February to mid-April say it remains a mystery, due in part to the government’s slowness in investigating the phenomenon.

Authorities were so late in gathering tissues from the mammals that crucial clues were likely lost, said the scientist heading the dolphin death probe, Armando Hung, head of the molecular biology lab at Cayetano Heredia University.

At the same time, local officials have been so slow in removing carcasses that the Health Ministry urged the public last weekend to stay away from beaches from Lima, the coastal capital, northward, though it did not identify any specific health issue.

Up and down the coast, disoriented pelicans have been seen standing on beaches where they don’t normally alight. Some have even been seen walking along coastal roadways.

Beginning at the end of January, daily catches of about 5 tons of anchovetas a day by fishermen in the northern region of Lambayeque dwindled after they began finding the small fish dead on the beach, said Fernando Nique, president of the Puerto Eten fishermen’s association.

“After that, we haven’t seen any more anchoveta,” he said.

Patricia Majluf, a biologist and former deputy fisheries minister, said that tongues of warm water reach into coastal zones, driving anchovetas deeper underwater where many birds can’t reach them.

“For a coast as dynamic as ours, it’s not rare that this occurs,” said Majluf. “It looks ugly because this has occurred at the same time and place (as the dolphin deaths).”

A biologist at the National University of Trujillo, Carlos Bocanegra, said his analysis of 10 dying pelicans last week supports that theory. Their digestive tracts were either empty or had the remains of fish pelicans don’t normally eat.

Scientists say the dead pelicans are generally young, 3-4 years old, an age in which they do not dive as deep as their elders.

Ocean temperatures in the region, said Bocanegra, are currently 6 degrees Celsius (10 degrees Fahrenheit) above normal for this time of year, Peru’s autumn.

A similar pelican die-off happened in 1982-1983 and again in 1997-1998 when the El Nino meteorological phenomena warmed the ocean, Bocanegra said.

“We saw mass deaths along Peru’s entire coast, also associated with high sea temperatures. Pelicans, cormorants, Peruvian boobies and guanay cormorants died,” he said.

The dolphin die-off, by contrast, remains a mystery.

Hung told The Associated Press that lab tests have so far ruled out a number of bacterial infections as the cause of the dolphin deaths, though other tests remain.

14 MayRussian plane goes missing in Indonesia, dealing blow to aviation industry

The late-model Russian Sukhoi SuperJet-100 was meant to revive Russia’s aging and accident-prone airplane fleet. It disappeared on a demonstration flight.

In what is likely to be a terrible blow for Russia’s struggling aviation industry, a Sukhoi SuperJet-100,?the first completely new post-Soviet jetliner, went missing during a promotional tour in Indonesia.

The plane is?presumed crashed, although Russia’s official RIA-Novosti agency said that darkness and fog have prevented search teams from reaching the site where the plane is believed to have gone down during a demonstration flight near Mt. Salak, about 50 miles from Jakarta.

The SuperJet, a half-dozen copies of which are already serving with two Russian airlines, is supposed to replace the fleets of aging Soviet-era Tupolev, Antonov, and Yakovlev mid-range aircraft that serve hundreds of far-flung regional routes across Russia and which have?suffered a rash of catastrophic accidents in recent years.?The situation became so bad last year that then-President Dmitry Medvedev ordered two regional workhorses, the Tupolev Tu-134 and the Antonov An-24,?to be permanently grounded.

Great hopes have been invested in the SuperJet, which was developed by Russia’s famous producer of fighter planes,?Sukhoi, with input from several top Western aviation firms, including Boeing, Snecma, and Honeywell. The plane meets all the latest global aviation standards, and production models should be able to carry almost 100 passengers with an operating range of up to 2,500 miles, which makes it an ideal replacement for a wide range of?troubled Soviet aircraft?on Russia’s multitude of outback routes.

There are also high hopes that the plane might do well on international markets, particularly in Asia, where its $35 million price tag makes it a tough competitor for similar-sized jets produced by the Canadian Bombardier Inc. and the Brazilian Embraer SA.

The SuperJet, which has sailed through testing and certification, has also been relatively accident-free in its development stages. The only serious mishap so far occurred in March, when a SuperJet operated by Aeroflot was forced to abandon a flight from Moscow to the Caspian city of Astrakhan due to problems with its undercarriage. Airline officials said passengers were never in danger.

But Russia’s airline industry has been hit with a series of scandals, including revelations that many engineers working in aircraft factories have inadequate or fake diplomas.?

Many Russians can recall, often with a shudder, how a catastrophic crash of the Soviet Union’s “Concordski” Tu-144 supersonic jetliner?at the Paris air show in 1973?destroyed the USSR’s reputation as a worthy competitor of the West in aviation. All eyes will be on the investigation into today’s SuperJet disappearance, and everyone will be hoping it does not reveal fundamental flaws in the plane’s design.?

Some reports said there were 44 people on board, others 50, including its eight-member Russian crew. Many of the passengers were aviation journalists and representatives of Asian airline companies that have been considering purchases of the new aircraft. The plane had previously visited Myanmar, Pakistan, and Kazakhstan. After Jakarta it was supposed to go to Laos and Vietnam.

11 MayVengeful teeth-pulling dentist story deemed a hoax

Remember the tale of the jilted Polish dentist who pulled all the pearly whites from the mouth of her ex-boyfriend?

Turns out the story has no teeth.

The report that dentist? Anna Mackowiak removed all her ex-boyfriend’s teeth after he came into her dental office complaining of a toothache turned out to be false.

[Related: Do clean teeth really protect against heart disease?]

The popular story, which included quotes from both parties and ended with statements that Mackowiak was being investigated and that the man had already lost his new girlfriend because of his toothless look, was picked up by Yahoo! News, MSNBC and dozens of other major U.S. media outlets.

[Related: Dentist fines patient for negative online review]

Kudos to MSNBC contributor Erin Tennant? for chipping away at the story and getting to the truth of the matter.

Here’s what Tennant learned:

  • The Polish police agency in the region where the incident reportedly took place is not investigating any such case.
  • Poland’s Chamber of Physicians and Dentists is not investigating any case like the one reported. Nor, is a dentist named Anna Ma?kowiak listed on its professional register.
  • News outlets in Poland did not report the story. Some, however, reported the foreign media’s coverage of what they called a “prank.”
  • The original story was traced back to Britain’s Daily Mail newspaper. The writer Simon Tomlinson,? says he does not know where the story originated, despite its bearing his byline. “I’ve drawn a bit of a blank,” he told MSNBC.
  • American Dental Association’s? national spokesperson, David Johnson Jr., said the story was highly improbable because most dentists are?equipped to administer drugs only for conscious sedation dentistry. That would mean the man would’ve known all his teeth were being pulled as it was happening.

It looks like, in this case, the only thing pulled was our leg.

T-Mobile wants new customers to pay upfront, says its nothing personal

A change to T-Mobile‘s billing methods means it’ll want to see the color of your money before you’ve barely had time to play with your new handset. Normally you’d enjoy a liberating spell of non-topping-up telephonic joy before the cold, financial reality of the money being sucked out of your bank account. However, from the 20th of this month, new post-paid customers will be expected to trump up in advance for the recurring part of their bill. Don’t panic though, while the first bill might feel a bit heftier (as it includes the pro rata amount for the month, and the next full month,) you’re still paying the same amount over time. But, if you’re used to the old method, it might come as a bit of a shock when that first magenta envelope hits your letterbox.
