[A] stirring, emotional portrait of a high school football team in the impoverished neighborhood of North Memphis, Tenn.

It’s a bit too long and a bit too vague at times, but this is a film about dedication, progress and the bond of human effort. It just also happens to include football.

“Undefeated” needs less of what we know we’ve seen (the football stuff) and more of the players’ and coaches’ lives, which even if we feel we’ve seen, we haven’t.

What makes this a terrific film is how much we care about the players.

Courtney really does believe all that stuff about adversity and character, and the film is moving for its modest tale of boys learning to act like men.

For all its good intentions, the film, like its main subject, is a tourist, earning trust as it earnestly captures the incredible struggles of these young men, but never digging deep enough to actually make the story theirs.

A touching documentary that offers a field-level portrait of male mentorship, compassion and unvarnished hope – all without a Hollywood ending.

It is a powerful reminder of the difference one person can make — and of the consequences when no one is willing to make that difference.

What lifts ‘Undefeated’ above other sports docs is the remarkable force of Bill Courtney’s personality.

It may call to mind The Blind Side or Remember the Titans, but there’s no Hollywood glitz in the blighted burg of Manassas.

I regret that we don’t meet more of Courtney’s players, but that might have required a miniseries rather than a movie. And “Undefeated” makes sure the coach who is its central figure is more complex and fascinating than most fictional movie characters.

…an inspirational and often touching film that lets us get to know a dedicated coach who has faith in his players and delivers what he promises (almost).

This is a film that doesn’t cater only to the traditional football fan.

In introducing us to [Coach] Courtney…Undefeated finds its voice

Just like a well-fought playoff win, it’ll leave you a little misty-eyed.

This is one of the best sports documentaries of the last few years and while I don’t think it should have won in a VERY good year for non-fiction film, I’m really not upset at all that it did.

Finds the warmth and vulnerability that is sometimes hard for outsiders to see beneath the rough, damaged exterior of the impoverished Memphis neighborhood where much of the action takes place.

The hardened inner-city kids here are far more authentic than anything Hollywood can offer, and as a result the film has a raw emotional weight that commercial features rarely achieve.

Undefeated does more to draw a straight line between the desire to win (as opposed to actually winning) and the character of a man than a thousand locker room pep talks.

28 JanNo blood?! ‘Hugo’ was new world for Scorsese

By Randee Dawn

Martin Scorsese is not known for making comedic movies. But in person, he’s a complete crack-up. Just ask TODAY’s Al Roker, who sat down with the veteran director behind such iconic films as “Raging Bull” and “Goodfellas” — and talked (and laughed) with him about something very different: His first for-children and first 3-D film, “Hugo” (which leads all Academy Award nominees with 11),?and the joys of being an older dad.

“The material — Brian Selznick’s book ‘The Invention of Hugo Cabret’ — had all the elements of a story that could be enhanced by 3-D,” said the filmmaker, who Roker reminded had expressed doubts a few years ago about being able to do a 3-D film. “I’m not talking about a 3-D that jumps out at you and throws spears and arrows and ping-pong balls. … But I thought a 3-D that would enhance the story and immerse the audience into a special world … (and the book) has that world.”

A world that was surprisingly (for Scorsese) blood-free. “They kept looking at me, the crew,” said Scorsese, “‘What’s happening?’” He told them, “Keep going men, we’ll have like a train crash … we’ll do something.”

He also revealed his inspiration for the film: His wife, Helen Morris, telling him to “make a film the kid could see for once” — a line he used while accepting a Golden Globe earlier this month.

“The kid” is his 12-year-old daughter Francesca. Scorsese is 69, which makes for a big gap in their generations, but he says being an older father is all right. “It’s a totally different experience (than being a younger father; Scorsese has two other daughters from his 20s and 30s),” he said. “Maybe it’s more grandfatherly in a way. I became very, very immersed in her world … how (children) perceive things, their imagination, her and her friends, so it became very natural to make a transition to a picture like this.”

So, has she seen it? Several times, he reported. “She likes it. … She says, ‘Do I have to see it again?’” said Scorsese. “I said, ‘Yes!’ … She’s only seen it four, five times? What is this? Go, come on, sell it, you have to be there!”

“Hugo” is currently in theaters.

08 JanFive Favorite Films with Emile Hirsch

Whether he’s piloting futuristic racing cars around a kaleidoscopic funhouse or perishing earnestly in the North American wilderness, Emile Hirsch has been steadily building a solid acting resume that surely hints of some great work to come. And though he’s been relatively quiet since roles in Gus van Sant’s Milk and Ang Lee’s Taking Woodstock, the young actor is set to return with a bunch of new films, the first of which — opening in theaters this week — is the sci-fi action thriller The Darkest Hour, the debut feature for visual effects expert-turned-director Chris Gorak, produced by Timur Bekmambetov. Hirsch stars, alongside Olivia Thirlby, as a young American traveler in Moscow who finds himself pitted against a deadly, literally electric invasion by power-hungry aliens. Well now, that’s not good for tourism, Timur. We had a chance to chat with Hirsch recently, where he obliged us with his five favorite films… and an impromptu exegesis of Terrence Malick.

This’ll be my five favorite films of this moment. I really love A Streetcar Named Desire. With Streetcar Named Desire, and On the Waterfront — those are like the Brando movies that I think are so essential to the growth of film acting in general; I mean, Brando came along and changed the game.

The Matrix (Larry Wachowski and Andy Wachowski, 1999; 87% Tomatometer)

The Matrix was just such an incredible cinematic experience. I saw it when I was 13, in the cinema. I didn’t know anything about it — I hadn’t seen the trailer. It just blew my mind. I didn’t know anything about it when I first saw it. And I was lucky enough to be able to work with the Wachowskis later, years later, on Speed Racer, which I had a great time on.

Raging Bull was just an incredible performance by Robert De Niro. A great, you know, show of discipline by an actor. And Martin Scorsese… visually, it was just so cool.

The Usual Suspects was Bryan Singer’s masterpiece. It was such a great ensemble and such a smartly-told film. The twist at the end was just fantastic. That movie kicked so much ass.

The English Patient I saw when I was really young, and the love story just devastated me, I think. You know, I was just sobbing. I loved it. Beautiful images. Something that can evoke that much emotion out of me — I was just really moved. So those are five that just come straight to the surface. You must get all kinds of people naming these obscure-ass movies though, right?

Most people tend to be pretty honest; unless they’re, you know—

Trying to be assholes. [Laughs] Did you see The Tree of Life?

Yeah, I loved it.

I thought it was amazing. All the shots of the bacteria, when you see them bubbling for the first time, all the gasses and the fluid. And you see the little helixes swimming toward the surface together. I thought that was so amazing.

I could’ve watched that sequence for two hours.

Yeah. People were complaining about the cosmos shots and the life shots but I found that infinitely great. It’s such a good film. So beautifully shot and acted. Another thing I really loved about it was the way in which you see the evolution of innocence to experience with these young boys, and how these young boys kind of become a metaphor for the human race; of how our species is just naturally corrupted with time. You’re born good but you eventually see this dark side as you get older; like when the boys get together and they’re killing things — it’s not that they’re raised wrong, it just happens naturally. And then [the movie's] like trying to go back to that state of grace, you know? I loved that movie. What do you think that doorway represented? Cause it keeps cutting back to that doorway. I think it represented the transition from life to death, but the reason it’s on the beach — it’s the solitary doorway — is because there’s no real difference: death, in a certain sense, is an illusion of change. You’re still in the same area — it’s like you can pass through this manifest doorway but you’re still in the exact same area as you were before.

The Darkest Hour opens in theaters this week.

‘Hugo’: Scorsese’s humbling hommage to his favorite art

Thematic potency and cinematic virtuosity — the production was designed by Dante Ferretti and photographed by Robert Richardson — can’t conceal a deadly inertness at the film’s core.

For all the wizardry on display, Hugo often feels like a film about magic instead of a magical film…

I have seen the future of 3-D moviemaking, and it belongs to Martin Scorsese, unlikely as that may sound.

It’s a fairy tale for mature viewers, but the airy exterior hides emotional depth.

One of the most magical viewing experiences of the decade so far.

It’s possible to see the attraction, but when people break into applause over the credits, some are going to be left cold.

It’s a deeply felt piece of work, something which only Scorsese could have brought to the screen…

Beautifully photographed and well acted but the storyline, especially when Kingsley’s character takes center stage, is tediously tiring

Martin Scorsese unleashes his devotion to the magic of movies with a zeal that is enchanting.?

For youngsters with a secret sense of wonder about how the world works, Scorsese is offering a golden key to a limitless world of make-believe.

A masterpiece of visual storytelling and a heartfelt homage to the industry that Scorsese has triumphantly made his own.

Beautifully made and superbly acted, Hugo features terrific 3D effects and stands as a charming love letter to silent cinema, but it’s let down by a weak central plot and the script never quite connects on an emotional level.

It might be curtains for celluloid, but Scorsese, a boyish 69, clearly isn’t leaving the stage any time soon. He directs every film with the passion of his first. And it shows.

Director Martin Scorsese’s well-documented affection for all things cinema has never been more evident than in the enchanting and imaginative Hugo.

It sounds a bit strange to say this about the man who gave us Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, and so many other classics of hardcore machismo, but Martin Scorsese’s new movie Hugo is delightful.

Scorsese’s best film since Goodfellas… a celebration of the transportive joy that comes from watching [movies].

The charming if overly gilded story of an unwanted teenage boy rescued by art and friendship.

Something very rare: a celebration of past achievement that doesn’t succumb to nostalgia. Scorsese pays his respects to the past but also demonstrates that the artform Melies loved remains exciting.

This love letter to the movies is something to cherish.

This is a great director’s greatest love story.

Scorsese uses 3D to submerge viewers into a glittering storybook world, but all of Hugo’s beauty can’t make up for the sidetracking of the tale of the orphaned boy living in the train station in favor of a film preservation PSA.

If however, you are not a film scholar or a fan of the period, Scorsese will skillfully turn you into one without you even knowing it.

(AP) ? The gods of ancient Greece have extended their rule to the weekend box office with a No. 1 debut for the action tale “Immortals.”

The story of Greek hero Theseus took in $32 million domestically, while Adam Sandler’s comedy “Jack and Jill” opened at No. 2 with $26 million, according to studio estimates Sunday.

The new movies bumped the animated hit “Puss in Boots” to the No. 3 spot after two weekends at the top. “Puss in Boots” earned $25.5 million, raising its domestic total to $108.8 million.

Director Clint Eastwood’s “J. Edgar,” a film biography starring Leonardo DiCaprio as longtime FBI boss J. Edgar Hoover, played in narrower release and opened at No. 5 with $11.5 million.

Released by Relativity Media, “Immortals” stars Henry Cavill and Freida Pinto in a tale of human heroes battling an evil king (Mickey Rourke) who aims to bring down the Olympian gods.

With males making up 60 percent of its audience, “Immortals” has a chance to corner much of the action market through Thanksgiving weekend and beyond, a period likely to be dominated by family movies such as “Happy Feet 2,” ”The Muppets,” ”Hugo” and “Arthur Christmas.”

“The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn ? Part 1″ does open Friday, but that blockbuster action fantasy franchise mainly draws female crowds.

“There’s really not another action movie until you approach the Christmas holidays,” said Kyle Davies, head of distribution for Relativity. “Over the next few weeks, there’s no real competition for us.”

Sandler plays dual roles in “Jack and Jill,” as a sturdy family man and his needy sister, who comes to visit for Thanksgiving.

“Jack and Jill” got off to a solid start but came in on the low end for Sandler, whose comedies typically open in the $30 million to $40 million range. Still, it continues Sandler’s virtually unbroken string of strong openings for his broad comedies dating back to the late 1990s.

“A big part of his success is just that sort of Everyman appeal he has, whether it be the guys going out to have a beer or girls thinking he’s just as charming as all hell,” said Rory Bruer, head of distribution for Sony, which released “Jack and Jill.”

“J. Edgar” played in 1,910 theaters, compared with more than 3,000 for the rest of the top-five movies. It was the weekend’s grown-up choice, with 66 percent of viewers over age 50, according to distributor Warner Bros.

Like “Immortals” with action crowds, “J. Edgar” has the prospect to dominate among older viewers through Thanksgiving weekend, one of the busiest times of the year for movie theaters.

“We’re the adult choice,” said Dan Fellman, head of distribution for Warner. “We feel we have really good play time ahead of us going into the holiday.”

“J. Edgar” will join a parade of potential Academy Awards contenders arriving before year’s end as Hollywood rolls into its most diverse season, when drama, comedy, action and family films share screen time.

“This was one of the first weekends we’ve seen in a while that had a nice combination of films that gave us a really solid weekend,” said Paul Dergarabedian, an analyst for box-office tracker Hollywood.com. “To me, this is what the holiday season is all about, having films like ‘Immortals’ in the mix in the top-five with a drama like ‘J. Edgar.’”

The variety clicked with audiences this weekend. Overall revenues came in at $137 million, up 13 percent from the same weekend last year, when “Megamind” led with $29.1 million, according to Hollywood.com.

Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at U.S. and Canadian theaters, according to Hollywood.com. Where available, latest international numbers are also included. Final domestic figures will be released Monday.

1. “Immortals,” $32 million.

2. “Jack and Jill,” $26 million ($2.7 million international).

3. “Puss in Boots,” $25.5 million.

4. “Tower Heist,” $13.2 million ($7.6 million international).

5. “J. Edgar,” $11.5 million.

6. “A Very Harold & Kumar 3D Christmas,” $5.9 million.

7. “In Time,” $4.2 million.

8. “Paranormal Activity 3,” $3.6 million.

9. “Footloose,” $2.7 million.

10. “Real Steel,” $2 million ($12 million international).

26 OctArab films showcase turbulent, redemptive year (Reuters)

DOHA (Reuters) ? The Arab Spring of pro-democracy uprisings features prominently — both directly and more subtly — in the selections at the third annual Doha Tribeca Film Festival, kicking off in the Qatari capital this week.

The festival, launched in 2009 in the tiny Gulf Arab state, seeks to showcase the work of Arab filmmakers who this year were able to draw on the momentous political changes in their own countries for artistic inspiration.

Highlights include “Rouge Parole,” set in the tumult of revolutionary Tunisia, which charts the expulsion of its president and the country’s first steps toward democracy.

Sherif El Bendary’s “On the Road to Downtown,” set in Cairo’s Tahrir Square, follows the lives and hopes of six people connected in different ways to the city’s downtown core.

“Our selection of documentaries provides for reflection on political change. But we also offer a number of films that look into private worlds and subtler aspects of the Middle Eastern experience that are not always evident to political observers,” said the festival’s Chief Arab Programer, Hania Mroue.

“The Virgin, the Copts and Me” takes on an otherworldly subject in investigating the appearance of the Virgin Mary to millions of Egyptians via a videotape on which only true believers can see her image.

“This is a very important film for post-revolutionary Egypt, as it sheds light on the Coptic community, which was taboo to do a few years ago,” Mroue said.

The Algerian title “Normale” examines what happened in the Algerian street as neighboring countries’ dictators were being toppled.

“The youth in Algeria felt they could now express themselves more freely. The film addresses the revolution in a very subtle way,” she said.

Lina Alabed’s “Yearning” focuses on the lives of women in Damascus and their approach to personal freedom in a society dominated by men.

Women are also the focus in two sports documentaries that examine the taboos surrounding women and boxing in Tunisia (“Boxing with Her”), and the life-altering experience of a young women’s basketball team in northern Iraq (“Salaam Dunk”).

Other headliners include the world premiere of “Black Gold” with Antonio Banderas, set in the 1930s at the dawn of the oil boom and the first major motion picture shot in Qatar.

Laila Hotait Salas’ “Crayons of Askalan” recreates the powerful story of Palestinian artist Zuhdi al Adawi, imprisoned at the age of 15 in Israel’s notorious Askalan jail.

Qatar launched the film festival as a partnership between the Doha Film Institute and Tribeca Enterprises, which also operates New York’s Tribeca Film Festival.

Created as a way to rejuvenate lower Manhattan after the September 11, 2001 attacks which destroyed the World Trade Center, the Tribeca Film Festival in New York has become a showcase for international films with a political edge.

Organizers said the Doha event aims to do the same, using the festival to shine a spotlight on Arab cinema.

“We don’t want to focus only on the big names, we want to give a space also for new voices, especially from the region,” Mroue said.
